Getting to Rocky Point Mexico & Border Crossing Information
Mileage & Border Crossing:
Rocky Point is located four hours south of Phoenix or Tucson, Arizona or eight hours from San Diego in the "free zone". The highway from the border to Rocky Point is well paved and maintained, and marked in Kilometers. You do not need a passport for travel in the free zone. There are no special permit or visas required to travel to Rocky Point and the "free zone", but all vehicles are required to carry Mexico car insurance, which is available online at mexins.com and mexicantouristpro.com. You should always bring proper I.D.
If you are planning on traveling beyond the "free zone" or have other travel questions, please contact the Sonora Tourism Center in Tucson at 520-784-0551, or the Mexican Consulate. New rules have opened the highway to San Carlos without a car permit now, but you still have to fill out the quick visa form at the border for a trip to San Carlos only. The port of entry is closed from midnight to 6 a.m.
